Living an Empowered Life
Monthly Theme: Creativity/Freedom/Choice
SOM Point of View
What does it mean to live an empowered life? If you look up the definition of empower you might get something like this: “to give power or authority to.”
I don’t know. That sounds like the opposite of empowerment. I don’t wish to give my power or authority to anyone.
I prefer this one, “to make someone stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights.”
Look up antonyms for empower you get things like refuse, reject, disenfranchise. When I think of the opposite of being empowered, I think of victim.
I think we either live lives of victim-hood, or empowerment. I do not believe that there are in-between, gray areas with this topic. We are either empowered or we are victims.
And no one can empower us or victimize us. And before you protest about the guy that raped you when you were 12, or about the parents who beat you when you were little, or about the society who threw you in jail because you were young and black and an easy target in this racist world, let me qualify this by saying that yes, there are indeed true victims in the world. People who did indeed get victimized by others. People who were easy targets for fear-based power hungry monsters who live their lives seeing how much they can beat down others.
If you believe that God is some omnipotent being who hears all prayers, says “yes” to some, “no” to others, and “maybe, but not now” to the rest, you are mistaken. By what rule of thumb would God decide? If you believe that God is the creator and decider of all things in your life, you are mistaken. God is the observer, not the creator. And God stands ready to assist you in living your life, but not in the way you might expect. It is not God’s function to create, or un-create, the circumstances or conditions of your life. God created you, in the image and likeness of God. You have created the rest, through the power God has given you. God created the process of life and life itself as you know it. Yet God gave you free choice, to do with life as you will. In this sense, your will for you is God’s will for you.” – Neale Donald Walsh
“I am always free to choose my thoughts. Through the power of prayer, my imagination and creativity I can think myself out of any circumstance, situation or condition.”
Join us each Sunday as we discuss the benefits of applying spiritual principles in our lives.
